Bishop Seun Adeoye of the Sufficient Grace and Truth Ministry in Osogbo, Osun State has accused the Osun state government of making clandestine move to “silence” a human right lawyer, Kanmi Ajibola.

Adeoye made the allegation to newsmen at the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Osogbo, the state capital.

He said the alarm became necessary going by his status as an harbinger of justice, equity, peace, and as a cleric, adding that he has plethora of evidence to show that the Osun State government is hell bent in “silencing the human rights lawyer for instituting several cases against the government”.

He highlighted cases that Ajibola had secured court judgement against the state government to include: A case compelling the government to declare the debt profile of the state, the recent judgement against the changing of name of Osun State to ‘State of Osun’ among others.

Adeoye added that aside the covert plan to “silence” Ajibola, the state governmet has also imposed heavy tax on the lawyer in the bid to victimise him.

“Kanmi Ajibola has been singled out for heavy tax to the tune of N5.3million . It was obvious that no establishment around his office had received such a huge tax.

“Information available to me shows that the government is planning to prosecute and jail Ajibola. The man can no longer walk again in the afternoon.

“Nothing must happen to this man. I call on all stakeholders, security agencies, to rise up in defense of Ajibola. I am very sure that the state government has filed criminal charges against the lawyer.

“I am alarmed by a bit of information available to me with an ongoing project embarked upon by the state government to take away “troublesome” Kanmi Ajibola out of the system or out of circulation.

“I have authoritatively learnt that a special team coded ST and headed by a very close serving Commissioner to Governor Rauf Aregbesola was being set up few weeks ago to find a lasting solution to Barrister Kanmi Ajibola and his many court matters. ST is heavily being funded by the state government. Already, several cards are being laid on the table to actualize this major goal,” he alleged.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Adelani Baderinwa has described the allegation as baseless and unfounded, saying such act is totally strange to the state.

He said, “Since this government has been around, have you heard of any assassination. Then, the person who is making the claim for Kanmi, what is his status in the society?

“The congregation he leads, how big is it to the extent of exerting influence on the society. Are we saying Kanmi Ajibola is incapable of making his own case that he would need an “activist” bishop to make case for him. Of what purpose would it serve government to clamp him in detention or even very very ridiculous killing. What would the government gain from his death.”

“Do you think government felt that he is around? His cases what have they amounted to. Has it in actual disturbed government from what it is doing or the laudable programmes that Governor Aregbesola have been doing for Osun State? Has it in any way affected it adversely. Aregbesola is not a man who goes after anybody.”

“By the way, are we saying that sentiments should be put in the matter of tax payment. Are we saying that because he is the so-called activist, he should not be asked to pay his tax. I think the reasonable thing he should do is to negotiate. Let him go to Osun State Internal Revenue Service (OIRS) for a review of his tax. Those are the things he could do,” Baderinwa stated.
