Budget passes second reading after marathon debate
Lawmakers sat until midnight before approving the spending plan in principle.
The spending plan cleared its second reading late on Tuesday after a debate that ran past midnight, with members pressing the finance committee on how the extra borrowing would be repaid.
Committee members said the headline figure had risen by nine per cent since the draft was first circulated, mostly because of a revised fuel subsidy estimate.
A third reading is expected within a fortnight, after which the document goes to the upper chamber. Officials declined to say whether the timetable would slip again.
Hauwa I.
Useful summary. It would help to see the borrowing figure broken down by lender.
