CSOs URGE UN, AU TO DECLARE OCTOBER 22 GLOBAL DAY OF ADVOCATES _MINNA

By Aliyu Lawal

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria have called on the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) to formally declare October 22 of every year as the Global Day of Advocates, in recognition of individuals and groups working tirelessly to promote positive social change across the world.

The call was made in Minna, Niger State, by the initiators of the Day of the Advocate, Mr. Kalejaiye Olasunkanmi and Mr. Daniel Atori, who lamented the inadequate recognition and support for advocates despite their significant contributions to society.

The appeal followed the third commemoration of the Day of the Advocate, held on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in Minna, through a joint initiative of civil society organisations committed to recognising individuals who champion positive causes and community development.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Kalejaiye Olasunkanmi, Executive Director of Global Promoters for Community Initiative (GPCI), described the formal recognition of advocates as an important step towards building inclusive, accountable and sustainable communities.

He noted that advocates play critical roles in driving meaningful change by raising awareness, mobilising communities, influencing policies, promoting accountability and defending the interests of vulnerable and underserved populations.

According to him, establishing a globally recognised day for advocates would provide an international platform to celebrate their achievements, showcase successful initiatives and encourage greater support for individuals and organisations championing positive social transformation.

He also commended advocates across Nigeria for their sacrifices, dedication and commitment to improving people's lives.

In his remarks, the Secretary of the Coalition, Mr. Daniel Atori, said the campaign was aimed at securing international recognition for individuals who use their voices, skills and resources to make the world a better place.

“Our message is simple: celebrate the advocates, recognise their initiatives, support the cause and sustain the changes,” Atori said.

He explained that the initiative seeks to encourage the UN and AU to set aside October 22 as a special day for celebrating people who champion positive change globally.

Atori also appealed to development partners and relevant stakeholders to support the campaign, stressing that advocates make invaluable contributions to human rights, healthcare, education, child protection, gender equality, social protection, environmental sustainability and other areas essential to human development.

He urged international organisations and development partners to join the campaign, noting that formal recognition would help strengthen advocacy efforts and inspire more people to contribute to building a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable world.

The initiators expressed hope that the UN and AU would consider the proposal and give global recognition to the vital role advocates play in advancing social progress and protecting the rights and welfare of communities worldwide.
